A trendsetter

I might have figured out what it takes to be a trendsetter.

  • An enormous ego
  • A moderate level of mental and emotional instability
  • A general disdain for anyone who fails to exercise their ability to be original.

I was doing a search on youtube and came across what feels like the millionth parody of the Kanye West " Beyonce had the best video out" Mtv award thing. Then I got it. I remember reading something a while back about how during the French Revolution Louis XVI stood on his balcony and watched an angry mob go by and said something like "there go my people, I must find out where they are going so I can lead them" Most likely a made up line just like the "let them eat cake" thing that his boo was reported to have said. Either way it was an attempt to describe the epitome of a bad leader. In this particular example (which is no where close to being the main reason as to why ol' louis was a crappy ruler) he was interpreted as a bad leader because he had no idea where the people were going but I think its because he cared where they were going. When someone who is leading does not care if anyone is following what usually happens? People follow them!

The math behind it is pretty interesting too. There seems to be a direct relationship between the conscious or subconscious level of disdain that the leader has to the followers and how passionate the followers are about their leader. That's what that whole thing was. It was Kanye West saying Fuck you! Fuck the audience, Fuck anyone who said I couldn't come out on stage right now, Fuck this Taylor Swift chick whose getting an award, Fuck everybody. Then he pulled a Sexual Chocolate and walked off the stage. We Love That Shit!!! Correction let me say we respect it. Maybe not Respect Kanye West as such but we respect the balls behind that. That's Leadership that's trendsetting. Three things happened in that moment

  1. There was a strengthened polarization of Kanye West and Non Kanye West fans, I mean lets be honest anyone who said they hated him from that point on probably didn't like him before that anyway.
  2. Most people actually began knowing who Taylor Swift was (myself included).
  3. He made us followers again and that's what we did for days and weeks and months after, I think when the President of the United States calls you a Jackass then I'd say you're' influential.

The idea behind why we follow egotistical assholes is not entirely because we are insecure masochists, I think its rooted into something less Freudian. I believe the daily barrage of marketing messages about how we just don't cut it are chipping away at our confidence. You're not pretty or handsome enough, you're too fat, too pale, too dark don't have enough money, not sexy enough, not smart enough , you don't eat healthy enough, you drive a shit car, what! you haven't saved enough to retire? oh you're fucked !!! everyday it`s something.

The egotistical asshole does and says what we want to do every single time we hear someone say this and that essentially is being able to say back to them, Fuck you!! I ll do what I want when I want and be anything that I want to be at anytime I want to be it. The trendsetter looks at us with disdain because they see weakness. They flip mainstream the bird everyday of their lives and continue to be a bigger asshole. We in turn see this and we love it. We admire it that's why we follow it. We follow it until one day we learn how to do this ourselves. Then we take a left turn when the whole mob is turning right. We breathe in the new fresh clean air while walking down our own paths because we have a new found freedom. But don't look now because you probably have a mob following you and don't even realize it.
