I was having another almost daily music debate not too long ago when surprise was expressed by an equally versed music fan at the fact that I listen to a particular group because their sound came across as feminine. Not the group or individuals within the group but their actual "sound"was feminine and naturally this got me thinking. If you had to determine the sex of sound for whatever reason you were doing it, creation of a belief structure, forming of philosophical or theological theory, making hypothetical arguments or maybe you were just really stoned*, how would you go about it. Is it possible to build an argument that helps you determine the sex of an intangibles like air for example or in this case sound.
As always we (I) must start from the beginning(s). When in the womb and shortly after leaving before using any of the senses, humans react to sound. That reaction to sound begins before the understanding or conceptualization of what "sound" is. In order to avoid the eternal argument of when you become "you" and in an attempt to maintain sanity we will fast forward to the newborn stage. The first sound newborns react to is their mothers voice. They recognise it meaning the first understanding of what a sound is comes from the vibrational patterns of a woman's voice, that works for every human being. Is it safe then to argue that if we could brake apart the DNA of a sound we would indeed find that is made up of female chromosomes.
I know all this might sound like a bit of a stretch but lets look at it from another angle. All music from my point of view is about love. The need to love, the lack of love, the declaration of one's love, the loss of love, the search, triumph, intensity, absence, meaning and even hatred or better yet acknowledgement of the power of love. Either way Love is the the Alpha and the Omega of a song which by definition could be described as a collection of sounds. A moment made up of moments that are universes within themselves that we know as sounds. A song without love is like sight without color, they can co-exist independently but together they give each other meaning.
That feeling of oneness, the challenge to acknowledge or recognise the presence and ultimately strength of an emotion, the union with everything , the ability to travel in time, the soothing of ones soul and the recognition of true identity spiritual or otherwise that sound helps us achieve
is one that for me personally only a woman can and has helped exposed. I cant help but conclude that for me at least sound is female.
*something i was not when i wrote this..no seriously.
